The saying goes that if you put an old shoe under your bed all nightmares will stay away.

Cora never put a shoe under her bed (not only is she way too orderly to do a thing like that, but her bed lies directly on the floor), and maybe that’s one reason why, for many years, she has been dreaming of all kinds of shoe designs. With and without flowers, with and without buckles, with and without high heels – in her dreams, Cora’s shoes took on special shapes, but when morning came they vanished into thin air. She always forgot to put on paper the designs that haunted her dreams, although each time she promised herself she would.

In the meantime, on the other side of town, Daniela knew everything there was to know about shoes. She knew where to purchase the best leather and the best accessories, just like she knew that a good shoe last, whether made of wood,  ransparent Perspex or cork, was worth every cent spent on it. She also knew that the arch support* can make the shoe more comfortable or less so, that if the quarter* is too low the shoe slides off the foot, and if it is too high it leads to blisters, and that a low cut* gives you a longer leg and a finer ankle, while a high one makes the leg look thicker and the ankle stumpy. Of course, these things, and many others, Dani had learned in a shoe factory. A small, cute one, facing West, like any self-respecting shoe factory. At a certain moment, for personal reasons which nine months later were given the name of Eric, Dani gave up her creative work in the small shoe factory. For a while, she did the mommy thing, and she liked it. But two years ago or so, on a summer evening, at a small party between girlfriends that took place in Daniela’s wonderland garden, the girl who dreamt of shoes and the girl who knew about shoes decided to do something with all this knowledge and these dreams. That’s how the Atelierele Hărniciei brand of sandals was born. The sandals were introduced as “debutantes” for the first time in May 2010, during a vintage fair organised in the courtyard of the Cluj-Napoca Museum of Art.

And that was just the beginning.

PS: Cora continues to dream of shoe designs. She still doesn’t put them down on paper.

In case you were wondering:

* arch support = where the shoe curves up, right under your sole

quarter = the rear part of the shoe

cut = the degree to which the material of the shoe is cut
